How to Read an EN 10204 3.1 Certificate for Steel Wire

5 November 20266 min read

Read an EN 10204 3.1 steel wire certificate: connect coil identification, batch records, results and validation without confusing catalogue limits with tests.

Read an EN 10204 3.1 certificate for steel wire by connecting product identification, order requirements, inspection results and validation details. First link the document to the delivered coils, then compare reported results with the specified limits. A 3.1 heading does not complete that matching process.

This guide proposes a reading workflow that connects purchasing documents to the physical wire received. Adapt the suggested checks to your order requirements and quality records. The fictional example shows where to look for the information needed to complete each connection.

Does EN 10204 define the wire grade or the document type?

EN 10204 concerns inspection document types for metallic products. It does not replace the product specification covering the wire grade, dimensions or delivery condition. BSI identifies its scope as inspection documentation. Source: BSI, BS EN 10204.

An order describing only EN 10204 wire is therefore incomplete. Identify the product, nominal diameter, tolerance, delivery condition and requested document type separately. Where a product standard or customer specification is required, state its reference and edition rather than treating the certificate number as a material specification.

What is the difference between 3.1 and 3.2?

Type 3.1 includes specific inspection results and is validated by the manufacturer's authorized inspection representative, independent of the manufacturing department. It also contains the manufacturer's statement of compliance with the order. Independence in this context does not necessarily mean an external certification company. Brief comparison of inspection document types
TypeResults basisMain validation distinction
2.1No test resultsManufacturer declaration
2.2Non-specific inspectionManufacturer
3.1Specific inspectionManufacturer representative independent of production
3.2Specific inspectionAdditional authorized inspection party alongside the manufacturer

For 3.2, the manufacturer's representative is joined by the purchaser's authorized inspection representative or an inspector designated by official regulations. Which fields should be checked first?

Open the purchase order, delivery record and coil identification alongside the certificate. A product name may cover several sizes, so matching the commercial name alone is insufficient. Check identification first and technical results second to expose missing connections before assessing values.

  • Issuer, document number, date and any revision.
  • Purchase order, relevant line item and product description.
  • Steel grade, nominal diameter and stated delivery condition.
  • Connections between heat, batch or coil references and delivery records.
  • Requested results, their units and assessment limits.

Adapt this checklist to your acceptance process. If a field uses unfamiliar terminology, request the manufacturer's coding explanation. Where one certificate covers several product lines, mark which results belong to each line instead of relying on the general page heading.

Are certificate, heat and batch numbers interchangeable?

Do not use these identifiers as substitutes for one another. A certificate number locates a document; the connection to material heat, production batch and individual coils needs separate evidence. Manufacturers use different coding systems, so a letter prefix should not be assigned a universal meaning.

The table below is entirely fictional and does not describe an AFA shipment or certificate. H is assigned to a raw material heat, B to a wire production batch and K to coils for this example only. It illustrates an identification review, not an approved marking system.

Raw material heatH-EX-007Is it linked to production?
Wire production batchB-EX-021Is it represented by this document?

If the second coil's label is unreadable, do not assume it belongs to the first coil's document. Follow your quality process for unresolved identification and request the missing connection. Keep the original photograph, supplier explanation and final decision together.

How do catalogue limits differ from actual results?

AFA's annealed wire product information publishes a tensile strength range of 300–450 MPa for its product groups. A catalogue range is not a measured result for an incoming coil. Use separate columns for the specified requirement and reported result.

In an entirely fictional example, suppose the order requires 300–450 MPa and the reported value is 376 MPa. The number lies within the stated range, but this observation does not complete acceptance of the delivery. Establish which product, inspection unit and test method the result represents.

Specific inspection does not necessarily mean every delivered coil was tested individually. The test unit and required tests depend on the relevant specification and order conditions. Source: Van Leeuwen, specific inspection.

What should be checked in chemical and mechanical results?

Separate chemical analysis from mechanical test results. Do not turn a grade designation into an assumed measurement; compare each reported value with the relevant limit and unit. The SAE steel wire grade guide provides background on grade names.

A cell containing 376 is incomplete without a property and unit. A blank cell does not mean a zero result. Request clarification of an unclear decimal mark or abbreviation, and retain the original terminology when translating a record.

Does a raw material certificate describe every finished-wire property?

Check whether the document describes incoming raw material or the delivered finished wire. Seeing a raw material analysis does not establish that every finished dimension and mechanical property has been reported. Identify the production stage associated with each result.

Relevant incoming-material results may be transferred under specified traceability and supporting-document conditions. This should not be read as permission to treat every raw material result as a finished-wire result. Source: Van Leeuwen, transfer of results.

How should missing or conflicting information be queried?

Identify the document, page, line and affected coil instead of sending a general complaint about a wrong certificate. Put the expected and observed information side by side. Request the specific clarification needed: code mapping, a legible copy, an explanation or an issuer-corrected document.

Do not change values in the PDF yourself. Retain the original and issuer response, recording what changed when a revision arrives. Include document needs in your steel wire quotation enquiry before ordering and confirm what can be provided.

Frequently asked questions about EN 10204 documents

Does a 3.1 heading prove suitability for every application?

No; assess the document against the product and order requirements. Establish which properties and material group the reported results represent. Check the application's other requirements separately.

Can an ISO 9001 certificate replace a 3.1 document?

ISO 9001 concerns quality management systems, not the test results for an individual wire batch. Check the inspection documentation requested by the order separately. Source: ISO 9001 scope.

What if the certificate number is absent from a coil label?

The manufacturer's traceability system may connect records through other identifiers. Request the documented link between the label, delivery and certificate rather than assuming it.

Is a signed PDF a complete inspection?

A signature or validation record does not replace product matching. Review the issuer, scope and document revision alongside the other delivery records.

Does this guide confirm AFA supplies 3.1 or 3.2 certificates?

No; this article explains how to read documentation. Describe your document requirement with the product and order details, then confirm availability separately in writing.
