Annealed wire, black wire and baling wire are not galvanised (zinc-coated), so they rust in humid conditions. Rust is not only a cosmetic issue: rusty wire snaps when bent, loses strength and makes tying unreliable. Correct storage directly determines the wire's performance and life.
Why does steel wire rust?
These wires are bare (uncoated) steel. The steel surface oxidises when exposed to moisture and oxygen. The oxide layer on black wire provides no corrosion protection; it is only colour. Lasting protection comes only from galvanising.
Correct storage rules
- Covered and dry: Store wire protected from rain, snow and damp, well ventilated.
- Off the ground: Keep coils on pallets or racks so floor moisture does not reach the wire.
- Away from walls: Do not lean against outer walls; condensation transfers to the wire.
- In original packaging: Keep the wrap on until use; it reduces air contact.
- FIFO: Use older stock first.
For long or humid storage: oiled wire
If wire will be stored long, or in a humid region or sea transport, choose oiled wire. The oil film provides temporary corrosion protection, which is why it is common in export shipments.
Permanent outdoor protection: galvanising
If the wire will remain outdoors permanently, oil is not enough; galvanised wire is required.
Should rusty wire be used?
Light surface rust may be usable with care. Advanced rust weakens the cross-section; the wire snaps when bent. If in doubt, bend a length to test.
