Steel Wire Types and Selection Guide: Which Wire for Which Job?

Annealed wire, black wire, tie wire, reinforcement wire and baling wire compared in one table. Steel wire types by diameter, strength and application, plus how to choose the right wire for your job.

Two basic properties define a steel wire type: the production method (annealed or cold-drawn) and the diameter. Annealed wires are soft and bendable by hand, used in tying work; cold-drawn wires are hard and high-strength, used in load-bearing manufacturing. Choosing the right wire begins with the answers to these two questions.

All products are made to a precise -0.05 / +0.05 mm diameter tolerance. Rebar tie wire and reinforcement wire are different diameter classes of the same product family (annealed wire).

Annealed wire or cold-drawn wire?

This is the first and most important distinction in wire selection. Both start from the same raw material and the same cold-drawing process. The difference is the annealing applied afterwards.

  • Annealed wire: Heat-treated in a furnace and softened. Bends by hand, does not snap when twisted. Lower strength (300-550 MPa). For tying and baling.
  • Cold-drawn black wire: Not annealed, stays hard. High strength (500-1100 MPa). For load-bearing and high-strength manufacturing.

Wire selection by sector

Construction

There are two different wire jobs in construction. Thin rebar tie wire (1.00-2.00 mm) is used for spot-tying reinforcement bars. Thicker reinforcement wire (2.00-6.00 mm) is used for strengthening concrete and producing steel mesh.

Agriculture

Oiled baling wire is used to bind straw, hay and forage bales. This wire has two distinguishing features: surface oiling (friction-free feeding inside the machine) and ordered winding (uninterrupted feeding). For machine compatibility and diameter selection, see our baling wire types article.

Industry and manufacturing

Nail, spring, bolt, wire mesh and fence panel production require high strength. Cold-drawn black wire is used for these jobs. For usage details, see our cold-drawn black wire article.

How to choose the diameter

Once the production method is set, diameter comes next. General guidance:

  • 1.00 - 2.00 mm: Tying reinforcement bars (tie wire)
  • 1.80 - 4.00 mm: Baling (baling wire)
  • 2.00 - 6.00 mm: Steel mesh, concrete reinforcement (reinforcement wire)
  • 1.80 - 6.00 mm: Industrial manufacturing (black wire)

Why does raw material grade (SAE) matter?

Beyond the wire type, there is also the raw material grade. Codes such as SAE 1006, 1008 and 1010 indicate the carbon content of the steel; as the number rises, strength increases and flexibility decreases. Low-carbon grades (SAE 1006-1008) are used in tying wires, while a wider grade range (SAE 1006-1018) is used in industrial wires. For the meaning of the codes, see our SAE steel wire grades guide.

  1. Will the job be bent by hand or carry load? → Annealed wire / cold-drawn wire
  2. Which sector? → Construction (tie/reinforcement), agriculture (baling), industry (black wire)

Frequently asked questions

Which steel wire type is the most widely used?

Because of the size of the construction sector, annealed tie wire is the most widely used type. It is followed by baling wire (agriculture) and cold-drawn black wire (industry).

Are tie wire, reinforcement wire and baling wire the same wire?

All three are annealed wire but are produced in different diameters and for different purposes. Tie wire is thin (1-2 mm) for tying, reinforcement wire is thick (2-6 mm) for mesh and reinforcement, and baling wire is oiled and ordered-wound for baling.

Which wire does not rust?

None of these products are galvanised, so they will rust in damp conditions. All wires should be stored in a dry, covered area, raised off the ground. For applications exposed to the open air for long periods, galvanised wire is required.

What is the most common mistake in wire selection?

Choosing the wrong production method. Using hard black wire for tying (the wire snaps) or using soft annealed wire in a load-bearing application (the wire stretches and deforms) are the two most common mistakes.
