How much wire is used per bale?
The wire used per bale depends on two things: the bale perimeter and the number of ties.
- Bale perimeter: The wire must wrap around the bale. On a standard small square bale, the perimeter is about 1.6-1.8 metres.
- Number of ties: Small square bales are usually tied with 2 strands. On big square bales this rises to 4-6.
- Knot allowance: About 20-30 cm of extra wire per tie is used for the knot and waste.
On this basis, a standard small square bale uses about 2 metres per tie, or roughly 4 metres of wire in total (2 ties).
How to calculate your own needs
You reach an exact figure in three steps:
- Find the wire metres per bale: (bale perimeter + knot allowance) × number of ties.
- Multiply by your seasonal bale count: total metres = metres per bale × number of bales.
- Convert to kilograms: divide by the metres-per-kg value for your diameter from the table above.
Example: You will make 5,000 small square bales in the season, using ~4 m of wire per bale. Total: 5,000 × 4 = 20,000 metres. Since 2.50 mm wire gives 25.9 m per kg: 20,000 ÷ 25.9 = about 772 kg of baling wire. So roughly 1 tonne (with a waste margin) covers the season.
Which diameter of baling wire should be used?
Diameter selection depends directly on your baler's specification. The wrong diameter causes feeding and knotting problems in the machine.
- 2.20 - 2.50 mm: Small square balers, light dry hay
- 2.80 - 3.00 mm: Standard small/medium square bales, straw
- 3.40 - 3.50 mm: Big square bales, dense and heavy bales

Why does ordered winding matter in baling wire?
Even if your calculation is correct, work stops if the wire jams in the machine. Oiled baling wire prevents this with two features: ordered winding lets the wire feed without tangling or knotting, and surface oiling reduces friction. Without these two features the wire tangles and baling stops frequently.
