What Is Wire Rod (Filmaşin)? The Raw Material for Wire
7 October 20262 min read
Wire rod is the hot-rolled steel bar drawn down to make steel wire. What wire rod is, its SAE grades, and how it becomes binding and baling wire.
Wire rod (filmaşin) is the hot-rolled steel bar from which steel wire is made. It is usually produced in 5.5-16 mm diameters, in coils, and is drawn down on wire-drawing lines to become wire. The quality of the wire depends directly on the quality of the wire rod.
From wire rod to wire
Wire rod is drawn through successive dies by cold drawing to the required diameter. If soft wire is needed (tie wire, baling wire), it is then annealed. For the full process, see our how steel wire is made article.
SAE grades
Common wire rod grades for wire production are low-carbon: SAE 1006, 1008, 1010 and so on. As carbon rises, strength increases and flexibility decreases. See our SAE grades guide for details.
Frequently asked questions
What is wire rod made from?
Low-carbon steel, hot-rolled into a coiled bar (usually 5.5-16 mm), which is then cold-drawn into wire.
What SAE grade of wire rod is used for binding wire?
SAE 1006 is common for binding (tie) wire, as its low carbon content gives the softness needed after annealing.
AFA Çelik produces annealed wire, baling wire and black wire from SAE 1006-1018 wire rod in Türkiye. Request a quote or contact us.
