Hay & Straw Baling Wire — For Square Balers
7 October 20261 min read
Square balers use soft annealed baling wire to bind hay and straw bales. A guide to wire diameter selection by bale type and the right wire for export.
Square balers use soft annealed (black annealed) baling wire to bind hay, straw and forage bales. The wire is twisted and knotted inside the baler, so it must be annealed, not hard. The right diameter is chosen by bale size and density.
Wire diameter by bale type
| Bale type | Recommended diameter |
|---|---|
| Small square bale | 2.20 - 2.50 mm |
| Medium square bale | 2.80 - 3.00 mm |
| Big square bale | 3.40 - 3.50 mm |
Round bales are usually bound with net or twine, so wire is most common on square balers.
Why oiled and ordered winding?
Automatic balers use oiled baling wire: the oil film reduces friction and ordered winding lets the wire feed without jamming, so the line does not stop.
