What determines tie wire diameter?
Three factors are decisive in diameter selection:
- Rebar thickness: Thin rebar (Ø8-Ø10) is tied with thin tie wire, thick rebar (Ø16 and above) with thicker tie wire.
- Tie strength: Thicker wire holds a tighter, stronger tie. This matters at heavy rebar or load-bearing points.
- Cost: Thin wire is lighter per metre, so you make more ties with the same weight. It is economical for light work.

Why is 1.50 mm the most common?
1.50 mm is the standard choice on most sites in Türkiye because it balances two needs: thin enough to bend comfortably by hand, yet durable enough to hold the tie safely. Very thin wire (1.00-1.20 mm) can break while tying; very thick wire (2.00 mm) is harder to bend by hand and more expensive.
If your job is standard reinforced-concrete rebar tying, 1.50 mm is the safe choice unless a special situation requires otherwise.
Which is more economical, thin or thick wire?
There is an important point here. Thin wire is lighter per metre; that is, with 1 kg of thin wire you make more metres and therefore more ties. So thin wire is more economical for light work.
However, if a thin tie is weak and comes undone, the saving becomes meaningless. The right approach is to choose the thinnest diameter the job requires. Wire thicker than needed wastes money; wire thinner than needed is a safety risk.
