Construction Wire Types: Which Wires Are Used in Building?

31 August 20263 min read

Construction uses different steel wires such as tie wire, reinforcement wire and mesh wire. A comprehensive guide to construction wire types, where each is used, and how to choose the right one.

The main wires used in construction are tie wire, reinforcement wire and mesh wire. All are made from steel wire but come in different diameters and structures for different jobs. "Construction wire" is a general term; which wire is used depends on the type of work (rebar tying, concrete reinforcement, mesh production).

In this guide we explain the wire types used in construction, where each is used, and how to choose the right one.

Construction wire types comparison table

Wire TypeDiameter (mm)StructureUse
Tie wire1.00 - 2.00Annealed (soft)Tying reinforcement bars
Reinforcement wire2.00 - 6.00AnnealedConcrete reinforcement, mesh production
Mesh wire4.00 - 8.00Made from reinforcement wireSlabs, shear walls, ground slabs

1. Tie wire (rebar tie wire)

Tie wire is used to tie reinforcement bars together at their intersection points. It is thin (1.00-2.00 mm) and soft; it bends easily by hand. It is the most widely used wire type in construction. The most common diameter is 1.50 mm.

For details on tie wire, see our what is tie wire article.

2. Reinforcement wire

Reinforcement wire is used to strengthen concrete structures against tensile stress and to produce steel mesh. It is thicker than tie wire (2.00-6.00 mm) and produced in large coils (50-850 kg).

3. Mesh wire (steel mesh)

Mesh wire is a grid-shaped reinforcement element produced by joining reinforcement wires perpendicular to each other with spot welding. It is used in slabs, shear walls and ground slabs. Ready mesh speeds up labour compared with tying rebar one by one on site. For details, see our reinforcement wire and steel mesh and steel mesh calculation articles.

Which wire for which construction job?

  • Rebar tying: Tie wire (1.50 mm most common)
  • Concrete reinforcement and strengthening: Reinforcement wire
  • Slab and shear wall reinforcement: Mesh wire (steel mesh)
  • Precast building elements: Reinforcement wire

What to watch for when choosing construction wire

The right type. Tie wire for tying, reinforcement wire for reinforcing. The wrong type lowers work quality.

Annealed structure. Tie and reinforcement wires must be annealed (soft); hard wire snaps when bent.

Precise tolerance. For weld quality, especially in mesh production, a -0.05 / +0.05 mm tolerance is important.

Frequently asked questions

Which wires are used in construction?

Mainly tie wire (rebar tying), reinforcement wire (concrete reinforcement) and mesh wire (slab/wall reinforcement). All are made from steel wire; they differ in diameter and purpose.

Is construction wire the same as tie wire?

Tie wire is one of the construction wires. "Construction wire" is a general term; because tie wire is the most common, it often refers to tie wire.

What diameter is construction wire?

It varies by type: tie wire 1.00-2.00 mm, reinforcement wire 2.00-6.00 mm, mesh wire 4.00-8.00 mm.

Which wire is used to tie rebar?

Annealed tie wire is used to tie reinforcement bars; the most common diameter is 1.50 mm.
